Visit Klosterøy Island and the Utstein Kloster: Norway’s Best Kept Medieval Monastery

I had the opportunity to spend two days in Klosterøy Island as I made my way up the Northern coast of Norway this summer. Klosterøy is just 30 minutes away from Stavanger city center, and a perfect place to escape for a few days.

If you’re looking to add something to your list of things to do in Stavanger, look not further! Below you will find my tips for visiting Klosterøy Island, including the Utstein Kloster.

How do I get to Klosterøy Island?

If you’ve rented a car for your trip, it’s a fairly simple route from Stavanger’s City Center. Otherwise, the Kolumbus bus line stops there at least twice a day during the week. Be sure to pay attention if you are taking the bus as you’ll need to hop off and connect at the Sokn station.

What can I do on Klosterøy Island?

  1. Visit the Utstein Kloster (Abbey/Monastery)

The Utstein Monastery is the best preserved Medieval Monastery in all of Norway. All original facilities are open to the public for a fee except for the farm as it is privately owned. There are local volunteers who can provide historical information throughout the space.

2. Walk around the Fjøløy Lighthouse and Fortress

The Fjøløy Lighthouse was built in the late 1800’s and was in active use until the 1970’s. If you’re up for a small hike, the Fortress built on the mountain behind the Lighthouse was built by Nazi’s during World War II.

3. Kayak around the Island

Kayak tours and rentals are provided by Coastal Adventures via Utstein Kloster Hotell. I’d recommend contacting them a few weeks in advance to confirm availability.

Where can I stay on Klosterøy Island?

There is only one hotel on the island, Utstein Kloster Hotell and it is fantastic. The boutique hotel offers incredible views and service. They also have free bike rentals to use around the island!

Shan’s Tip: Have dinner at the hotel, all locally sourced food. Then take a bike ride to the lighthouse and watch the sunset!

Final Thoughts

Klosterøy Island is a perfect stop along the way of any Norwegian road trip. The Monastery is an incredible piece of Norway’s culture that is worth a stop for anyone who loves history.

Now it’s time to start planning your own adventure, Cheers!
