Trail Traffic
Since this was the start of the Alta Via 1 and the main access point to Lago di Braies, the trail leading up to Rifugio Biella was quite busy. Many hikers were out for day trips or spending just one night at a rifugio. The pace was slower than I would have preferred, but it turned out to be the perfect opportunity to meet fellow trekkers and make some new trail friends.
Rifugio Information
🏔️ Rifugio Biella – Great stopping point for Day 1 to have lunch and take a rest, they don’t have running water here but do sell water bottles
🏔️ Rifugio Sennes – I had several trail friends tell me the strudel here is amazing! I didn’t stop here but the views are gorgeous
🏔️ Rifugio Fodara Vedla – Beautiful location with upgraded amenities and their showers are amazing!
Trail Tips
✅ Bring plenty of water—there aren’t refill points after Lago di Braies.
✅ Expect a short scrambling section with cables (one-way traffic—be patient).
✅ Skip the road between Biella and Fodara—stick to the marked trail for fewer crowds and better views.

Final Thoughts
Day 1 of the Alta Via 1 is a perfect introduction to the Dolomites—busy at first, but filled with stunning views, welcoming rifugios, and plenty of chances to meet fellow hikers. While the pace may be slower than expected, it’s a great way to ease into the trek. Reaching Rifugio Fodara Vedla at the end of the day feels like a reward and sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
