Day 4 on Alta Via 1: Rifugio Nuvolau to Rifugio Citta di Fiume

The views on this stretch are truly next-level! Since the trail is almost entirely exposed, be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen. The approach to Forcella di Giau is breathtaking, and when you add in sparkling alpine lakes and blooming wildflowers, it feels like pure perfection.

Trail Highlights

This entire day feels like a highlight—it’s the perfect midpoint of the trek with fewer miles and less elevation gain, making it a lower-impact stage. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and if you have the time, it’s worth pausing for a snack or even a refreshing dip in Lago delle Baste. Along the way, you’ll also pass herds of cattle and sheep, adding to the charm of the experience.

Trail Traffic

This section alternated between pockets of heavy traffic and stretches of complete solitude. Since I hiked it over the weekend, the crowds were likely larger than usual. Most of the traffic was centered around Passo di Giau, where many day hikers begin their journey.
