Day 5 on Alta Via 1: Rifugio Citta di Fiume to Rifugio Attilio Tissi

Day 5 on the Alta Via 1 offers a little bit of everything: steep elevation gains as you ascend to Coldai, a visit to one of the trek’s most stunning alpine lakes—Lake Coldai—and a bit of scrambling along the way.

Trail Highlights

Lago Coldai is without a doubt the highlight of this section, offering breathtaking views. The trail between Lago Coldai and Rifugio Attilio Tissi continues to impress with stunning mountain scenery, and if you have the time, a stop at Rifugio Coldai is well worth it for a delicious bite to eat.

Trail Traffic

The trail leading up to Coldai was fairly busy with tour groups making the hike as a day trip. Beyond Coldai, however, the crowds thinned out considerably, with most people stopping at either Rifugio Attilio Tissi or Rifugio Mario Vazzoler.

Rifugio Information

🏔️ Rifugio Coldai – Just a short 15-minute hike from Lago Coldai, this rifugio is the perfect spot to stop for lunch. Their menu is excellent and makes for a great break before continuing on

🏔️ Rifugio Attilio Tissi – Offering incredible mountain views and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, this Rifugio was the most homey of all the ones I stayed at. Fun fact: all of their food is delivered by cable car!

Trail Tips

✅ There is a portion of the trek at the beginning that you’ll have to be on the main highway, be careful!

✅ The ascent to Coldai is tough—give yourself plenty of time and go at your own pace.

✅ Lago Coldai is a must if you’re a fan of alpine lake swims.

✅ Rifugio Attilio Tissi is cash only and sells only bottled water (the tap water isn’t drinkable).
