Travel Essentials: My Top Things I Can’t Road Trip Without

I spend a lot of my time driving to visit family and friends throughout the Midwest. Long drives have become second nature to me, but I do recognize how intimidating they can be for solo-travelers for the first time.
Top 5 Road Trip Items
As a solo-traveler, with my pup Smitty I’ve found there are some items that you simply must have when driving long distances. Here are a few of my must-have items when traveling solo in my car:
1. Roadside Emergency Kit
I have no shame in saying I don’t know much about the mechanics of automobiles. However, I do think it is important to have the essentials in case of an emergency. I feel a lot more equipped and secure with this kit in my trunk!

2. Water!
It might sound silly, but having a few gallons or a small pallet of water can come in handy. I’ve been on several trips where I don’t trust the water source or the stores are closed. Best practice, always have at least a gallon of water in the car!
3. Fleece Blanket
Another great item to have is a fleece blanket. In the event your car dies or you are in inclement weather, the blanket is great to have!
4. US Atlas with National Parks
Call me old school, but I love a good map. The Atlas has all the information you need to travel within the States and the National Parks. Having an Atlas and/or map is a great fail safe in case you get lost and don’t have cell service.

Shan’s tip: If you already know your route, take the time to mark it on your map so you know what to expect on your journey
5. Solar portable charger
This is one of my favorite items to have with me at all times! It’s great to have as a backup in case your phone is running low and the car charger isn’t working. I especially like this charger because I can take it with me on day hikes and it’s ready to go!

Final Thoughts
In addition to the items listed above, I always have a water bowl available for Smitty to use when we take breaks. Check out my road trip travel essentials list when I travel with Smitty here to see what I always have with me for an adventure with my pup.
