Day 3 on Alta Via 1: Rifugio Scotoni to Rifugio Nuvolau – Key Highlights

Day 3 on the Alta Via 1 was easily one of the most memorable of the trek. From exploring the historic WWI tunnels to scrambling up Averau and ending the day with a breathtaking sunset at Nuvolau, it truly had it all.

Trail Highlights
The WWI tunnels are an absolute must—while making your way up Lagazuoi, you can climb through these historic passageways carved into the mountain. The ascent up Averau adds a bit of scrambling, but the panoramic views along the way (and behind you) make every step worthwhile.
And once you reach Nuvolau, you’ll never want to leave—the sweeping vistas are nothing short of spectacular.

Trail Traffic
As you approach Lagazuoi, the crowds start to pick up quickly since many visitors come for the day to explore the WWI tunnels and take in the views from the summit. The base near Passo Falzarego was also bustling, with a large shop and a restaurant drawing plenty of people.
I happened to be hiking during a major race weekend out of Cortina d’Ampezzo, which likely added even more traffic, as the course wound through many of the surrounding mountains. Fortunately, once I reached Nuvolau, the atmosphere was much calmer—the rifugio is small and far less crowded.
Rifugio Information
🏔️ Rifugio Lagazuoi – Incredible views WITH a Sauna! This is also where you can purchase cable car tickets.
🏔️ Rifugio Scoiattoli – Awesome beer garden, not far from Nuvolau if you can’t get a room but want to catch the sunrise/sunset
🏔️ Rifugio Nuvolau – The best sunrise and sunset you will ever see in Italy.
Trail Tips
✅ Rifugio Nuvolau: Book this place ASAP! It books quickly and rarely has openings.
✅ WWI Tunnels: If you plan to hike down, know that you’ll be descending the entire side of the mountain. A headlamp is essential, and strong knees are a must.
✅ Averau: The ascent includes scrambling, and parts of the trail can be confusing due to recent rock slides. Be sure to use a GPS map and follow the trail signs carefully.
✅ Water Source: At the bottom of the mountain, just outside the WWI tunnels, you’ll find a water fountain before crossing the road to Passo Falzarego.
