Travel Essentials: 5 Things You Must Have on a Road Trip With Your Dog

When it comes to traveling with a pet, especially a dog over 50 pounds, I’ve learned there are several must-have items when going on the road. A lot of this is dependent on how your dog travels and how they are trained.

Smitty has been in the car with me for trips that are 4-5 hours long since he was a puppy so he’s no stranger to long hauls. Here is a list of some of my favorite items I always have in my car:

Top 5 items for a dog-friendly Road Trip

I’ve tested several products over the years and these 5 items have consistently proven to be the best.

1. Dog Back Seat Cover

The Duluth Trading Company hammock cover is great for Smitty! He’s able to stretch out in the backseat and still look out front if he wants to take on his co-pilot responsibilities. The hammock is waterproof and very durable.

2. Dog leash for the car

Instead of going back and forth between the house and trying to remember where you left the dog’s leash…Get yourself a leash to keep in the car! I keep it in my dog basket so it’s available whenever we take a pit stop.

3. Car storage organizer

This organizer can be used for multiple items, especially if you’re handy with your car. I keep all of my dog’s items such as treats, leashes and potty bags here.

4. Cushioned seat extender

This is probably both mine and Smitty’s favorite item. I usually lay a towel or blanket on the cushion so Smitty knows it’s OK to lay down. He can lay next to me when the back of the car is packed or if he just wants to be next/close to me for the ride.

5. Dog treats

Whether it’s a one or ten hour drive, I always make sure we have treats available for Smitty. Not only are Fromm snacks healthy for your dog, but they come in sealable bags, there is no need to worry about them falling out and making a mess.

Final Thoughts

In addition to the items listed above, I always have a water bowl available for Smitty to use when we take breaks. Check out my road trip travel essentials list to see what I always have with me for an adventure.

Now it’s time to start planning your own adventure, Cheers!
