Day 7 on Alta Via 1: Rifugio Bruto Carestiato to Rifugio Sommariva al Pramperet – Key Highlights

Day 7 on the Alta Via 1 ended up being my fastest day in terms of pace. While there’s a fair amount of elevation gain, it’s very manageable since much of the climb is shaded. Near the end of the trek, you’ll come across a beautiful rest stop between Forcella Dagarei and Forte di Forcella Moschesin — the perfect spot to take a break and refill your water.

Many hikers choose to power through this stage all the way to Rifugio Pian de Fontana, since it gets you over the pass. Most of my trail friends did just that, but when I met up with them in Belluno a few days later, they admitted it was a brutal push—even though it made their final day much easier. In the end, it really comes down to your preference!

Trail Highlights

The second half of the day offers truly breathtaking views, with dramatic mountain peaks surrounding you at every turn. Along the way, you’ll also pass plenty of grazing cow herds, adding that classic, picture-perfect Dolomites charm.

Trail Traffic

The only “traffic” I came across that day were my trail buddies I’d been leapfrogging with over the past few days. By this point, you’re far enough into the mountains that most local day trippers don’t venture out this way. Do note, though, that shortly after leaving Rifugio Bruto Carestiato there’s a stretch where the trail follows the main road—so be mindful of highway traffic.

Rifugio Information

🏔️ Rifugio Sommariva al Pramperet – This was definitely one of my favorite rifugios. Its smaller, more intimate setting gave it a cozy, home-like feel, and the surrounding views were absolutely incredible.

🏔️ Rifugio Passo Duran – A perfect place to pause for a coffee and light breakfast, making it an ideal spot for a quick break or mid-day pick-me-up.

Trail Tips

✅ After passing Passo Duran, the trail follows the main road for a short stretch, so be cautious of highway traffic.

✅ Refill your water whenever possible—there are several fully exposed sections where staying hydrated is essential.

✅ If you plan to power through to Rifugio Pian de Fontana, start as early as you can. It’s a long push of 12+ miles!

Final Thoughts

Day 7 of the Alta Via 1 strikes a nice balance between effort and reward, with shaded ascents, jaw-dropping mountain scenery, and charming rifugio stops that make the miles fly by. Whether you choose to end the day at Sommariva al Pramperet or push on to Pian de Fontana, the experience is sure to leave you inspired by the beauty and challenge of the Dolomites.

This stage truly captures the essence of long-distance trekking—peaceful trails, sweeping vistas, and the camaraderie of fellow hikers along the way.
