Day 8 on Alta Via 1: Rifugio Sommariva al Pramperet to Belluno – Key Highlights

The final day of the trek! This stage is a big one—not only does it mark the end of the journey, but it also includes a summit push. I recommend starting as early as possible so you can reach the top and really enjoy the experience. For safety, it’s also wise to tackle this section with fellow hikers.

The descent toward Rifugio Fontana can be tough on the knees, as the trail drops steeply for nearly two miles. Thankfully, the rest of the way down is much more pleasant, with a gentler path winding through the forest.

Trail Highlights

On a clear day—like the one I was lucky enough to have—the views along this stretch are some of the best of the entire trek. Panoramic mountain vistas surround you from every angle, and if you’re hiking during the right season, vibrant wildflowers add an extra touch of beauty to the landscape.

And of course, the ultimate highlight is finishing the trail itself and arriving at the final bus stop—a rewarding moment that marks the true end of the journey.

Trail Traffic

Similar to Day 7, this section sees very little traffic since you’re so far up in the mountains. I only crossed paths with a few day hikers, while most of the people I encountered were fellow trekkers I had gotten to know at the rifugios throughout the journey.

Rifugio Information

🏔️ Rifugio Fontana – I didn’t stay overnight here, but their breakfast pastries were an absolute 10/10! The hut is also surrounded by incredible views, making it a perfect spot for a quick stop.

🏔️ Rifugio Furio Bianchet – Nestled in the alpine forest, this spot was the perfect place to pause, enjoy lunch, and soak in the scenery before completing the trek.

Trail Tips

Summit Safety: Hike with a buddy. You don’t need via ferrata gear, but the trail is steep and very narrow.

Descent Options: After Rifugio Furio Bianchet, you can either take the main road down to the highway or follow the trail to the La Pissa bus stop.

Cool Off: If you have time, dip in the river behind the La Pissa bus stop—it’s the perfect way to refresh after the trek.

Alta Via Pin: Don’t forget to stop by the visitor center in Belluno to show your passport stamps and collect your Alta Via pin. If you didn’t collect stamps, photos of the rifugios you stayed at will also work.

Final Thoughts

Day 8 on the Alta Via 1 is the perfect finale to this unforgettable trek through the Dolomites. From the summit push to the panoramic views and the rewarding descent into Belluno, this stage ties together everything that makes the trail so special.

Completing the AV1 is both a physical and emotional achievement—one that leaves you with not only incredible memories but also the satisfaction of conquering one of Europe’s most iconic long-distance hikes. Whether it’s the wildflowers, the camaraderie with fellow trekkers, or that final dip in the river, this last day is a celebration of the entire journey.

A special thanks to The Hiking Club for partnering with me on this trek—highly recommend their services if you’re planning your own Alta Via 1 adventure!

Now it’s time to start planning your own adventure, Cheers!
