One Day at Black Canyon of the Gunnison: A Dog-Friendly Adventure

To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park until I found myself traveling through southwest Colorado—and I’m so glad I decided to stop. Despite being one of the top 20 least visited national parks in the U.S., it’s an incredible place with dramatic views and a peaceful atmosphere.
Even better? It’s dog-friendly. If you’re planning a visit with your pup, here are my top tips for exploring Black Canyon of the Gunnison with your dog in one day:

Top Things You Should Know Before Visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
👉 If you don’t have a National Park Pass, there is a $30 fee per car to enter. Your entry ticket is good for 7 days.
👉 South Rim Entrance is open year-round, North Rim entrance is closed in the Winter
👉 Dogs must be on a six-foot leash at all times (see below for more details)
Best places to Take Dog in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
🥾Tomichi Overlook
The first overlook point inside the park from the South entrance. There are a few short trails near the overlook and there is usually a ranger onsite to provide a Geological presentation.

🥾 Hike Rim Rock Trail
Rim Rock Trail is located next to the South Rim Visitor Center, it’s only a mile long but offers great views of the canyon.

🥾 Drive along South Rim Road
As you drive along the South Rim Road, there are 12 overlooks that have incredible views of the canyon, all are dog-friendly but they must stay on a leash. Here are some photos from my favorite spots.

⭐️ Chasm View
⭐️ Dragon Point

How to get to Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park
The closest airport is in Grand Junction if you’re planning to fly in. However, like many visitors—including myself—I found that most people reach the park as part of a road trip. The nearest town to the South Rim entrance is Montrose, which makes a great base for exploring the area.
Top Dog-Friendly Hotels to Stay in Montrose
- Hampton Inn Montrose → A little further from downtown Montrose, $75 pet fee
- Fairfield Inn and Suites → Great hotel that has a $100 pet fee
- Rathbone Boutique Hotel → Cute new hotel, only service animals allowed
How to Explore the Park Without Your Dog
If you have time—or can leave your dog at home or in boarding—here are some of the best things to do in the park.
✅ Drive down East Portal Road
I’d strongly recommend making this drive if you have a vehicle capable of driving down a 16%+ grade. The views are incredible and its a great way to see the park from a different perspective. This is also a fantastic spot for fly fishing!
✅ Raft or Kayak in the Black Canyon
For my adventure seekers, this is an absolute must! While you can’t raft/kayak within the park because it is too dangerous, you can still play on the water further downstream.
