After spending the past six months traveling across Colorado, I found myself returning to Salida again and again. Now, I’m excited to share my favorite things to do in this scenic mountain town.

Top 22 Things to Do in Salida

Salida has something for everyone—whether you’re an outdoor adventurer or an art lover. No matter the season, there’s plenty to do here, from fishing and hiking to skiing and browsing local shops.

In this post, I’ll share my favorite things to do in Salida after spending quality time exploring the area in all four seasons. Here are my top picks:

1. Fly Fish

Salida literally has the Arkansas River running through it, making it the ultimate hub for Anglers. If you are a seasoned Angler, I recommend Hecla Junction or the South Fork, both are dog-friendly.

If you’re looking to fly fish for the first time, I strongly recommend working with an outfitter on a guided trip to get the ultimate experience.

2. Visit Natural Hot Springs

One of the many natural wonders to be found in Colorado is its plethora of natural hot springs. Slaida has several hot springs nearby worth visiting.

  • Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center
    • To be honest this is more of a public pool than what most people envision for a hot spring. However it’s right off Highway 50 and a perfect spot to relax in town.
  • Mount Princeton Hot Springs
    • Mount Princeton is about 30 minutes away from downtown Salida. If you have enough time, it’s worth spending the night so you can fully relax. They offer plenty of day packages, I recommend booking at least a month in advance since it can be sold out especially on the weekends.
  • Cottonwood Hot Springs
    • These are located in Buena Vista, also about 30 minutes from downtown Salida. Cottonwood Springs have been available to the public since the 1870’s!

3. Drive Collegiate Peaks Scenic Byway

If you’re in the mood for a great road trip, cruising along the Scenic Byway (Highway 285) is the perfect choice. The drive offers stunning views of the Collegiate Peaks and plenty of fun, worthwhile stops along the way.

4. Explore St. Elmo Ghost Town

A perfect way to bundle a day at Mount Princeton Hot Springs is to drive to St. Elmo’s Ghost Town. I would not recommend visiting St. Elmo unless you have AWD/4WD as the road is gravel and can be rough at different times of year.

The town itself is small but fun to walk around and take photos. The general store has been repurposed as an Antique and candy shop. In addition to being home to hummingbirds, you can pay a $50c to feed local chipmunks.

Shan’s Tip: Strongly recommend making this drive with a 4WD or AWD vehicle. The last 10 miles are on a dirt road and I manage to get a flat on my way up! Make sure you have a Fix a Flat kit.

5. Explore South Park City

Another great historic town to visit on your road trip of the Collegiate Scenic Byway. There is an entry fee of $12 for adults and kids between 12-6 is $6. In addition to the town being dog-friendly, there are some great events such as the Burro Races that are worth a visit during the summer.

6. Drive/Hike/Bike Spiral Drive

If you’re looking to catch views of the Arkansas Valley and the town of Salida, the Spiral Drive will do the trick. Be advised that the road can be closed to vehicles certain times of year so there is a chance you’ll have to hike or bike it instead of driving but the views are worth it!

7. Visit Loyal Duke Dog Park

The perfect escape for your four-legged best friend. Loyal Duke is open all year round and has plenty of obstacles and toys in addition to free water/bowls.

8. Wine Tasting

There are a handful of wineries in the area that are worth a visit! Mountain Spirit Winery is family owned and has a tasting room open certain times of the year. Vino Salida Wine Cellars is also nearby as of Summer 2025, the tasting room is closed.

 9. Adventure on Monarch Mountain

Monarch Mountain transforms into a winter haven for skiers, particularly locals, as most tourists flock to larger resorts like Vail or Breckenridge. Nestled in the range is a well-equipped Visitor Center, offering a variety of activities and a glimpse into all the fun the mountain has to offer. During the summer, visitors can ride the scenic tramway for breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the valley below.

10. Snow Shoe!

Snowshoeing is one of my favorite winter activities—especially when I can bring Smitty along. The Salida area offers plenty of great hiking trails, but my personal favorite is heading up to the Monarch Mountain Visitor Center and exploring the snow-covered paths from there.

11. Grab dinner at Moonlight Pizza

In addition to offering delicious pizza, Moonlight is also home to over 10 homemade brews. They have a great outdoor seating area that is dog-friendly and on any given night there is live music. My personal favorites are the Full Moon and T-Guns.

12. White Water Raft on the Arkansas River

For all of my adrenaline junkies, there is no better place to White Water Raft then on the Arkansas River. The best time to hit the rapids is between May and June. Here are my top recommendations for guided tours:

🚣‍♂️ Buena Vista and Salida Half Day Water Rafting

🚣‍♂️ Buena Vista and Salida Raft and Climb

🚣‍♂️ Buena Vista and Salida Full Day Raft with Lunch

🚣‍♂️ Cotopaxi Water Rafting

13. Kayak on the Arkansas River

If you’re not looking to hit the rapids but want to enjoy a nice quiet day on the water, kayaking is another great option. To avoid rough waters, it’s best to consider kayaking during the spring or fall months. Totally Tubular and Salida River Adventures are both great outfitters to consider!

14. Grab a Coffee and Take A Break

There are several great coffee shops in town worth a visit. Both Brown Dog & Bunny and Clyde have dog-friendly patios. Howl Mercantile has a great little shop inside that is worth a visit!

15. Explore Royal Gorge

Just over an hour’s drive from downtown Salida, the Royal Gorge makes for a perfect day trip if you want to enjoy nature without too much physical exertion. The bridge is dog-friendly, and it’s a good idea to purchase tickets in advance.

If you have extra time, I encourage you to check out the Royal Gorge Railroad. It begins in Canon City and the ride is about 2 hours and absolutely stunning!

16. Shop til’ you drop!

Salida is known as one of Colorado’s first Artistic Creative District’s. There are several galleries to visit including The Maverick Potter. On any given day you can find beautiful street art on the main street of town.

17. Cocktail hour at High Side

After a long day of adventuring, sit back and relax at High Side with an ice cold bevy or PBR & shot if that’s your vibe. They have a great happy hour menu everyday!

Shan’s Tip: If you’re looking to continue cocktail hour, the Boathouse is walking distance from High Side and offers great views of the river and yummy food.

18. Surfs’ up!

That’s right, you can surf in Colorado! Both Salida and Buena Vista offer rapids that are surf-friendly. Both Badfish Surf and Totally Tubular offer lessons and board rentals. Unless you are an experienced surfer, I wouldn’t recommend going on the water without a guide.

19. Drink a Shake or Soda at the Pharmacy

If you want to take a step back in time, the Salida Pharmacy is the place to start. In addition to it being an actual Pharmacy, it has a traditional soda fountain where you can get soda and shakes.

20. Hike your heart out!

There are SO many great hikes in the area that are perfect for a daytime activity in addition to being surrounded by some of Colorado’s iconic 14ers. My top choices are the Monarch Crest Trail and Mount Shavano.

21. Picnic on the River

I found myself spending almost every mid-morning or afternoon on the river watching folks kayak, boogie board and surf their way down the river. There are plenty of picnic tables, public restrooms and park areas to sit back and relax. You MUST get a sandwich and/or salad from the Biker and the Baker, their food is fire.

22. Make your Own Jewelry

Reservations are strongly recommended especially in the summer months, but you can walk-in. Riveting Experience offers curated experiences to make custom jewelry that you can take home the same day.
