Tips for Traveling to Marquette, Michigan in the Summer With Your Dog

As the saying goes, If you haven’t been, you’ll never understand, that is what comes to mind when I think of Marquette and the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) in Michigan.
Traveling to the U.P. with your dog is a blast regardless of the season. I especially enjoy visiting in the summer months since the activities are really endless. Below you will find my favorite things to do with Smitty and where we like to stay and eat when we’re in town.
Best dog-friendly hikes near Marquette
Marquette is known for it’s outdoor beauty, here are my top three dog-friendly hikes you must check out!
- Sugarloaf Mountain
- This is a great trail just outside of downtown Marquette. The trail is well maintained and can get busy on the weekends. My personal recommendation is to try and catch a sunset at the top of the trail. Heads up that your dog must be on a leash for this trail!
- Ultimate North Marquette Loop
- I love doing this loop with Smitty because he can be off leash for the majority of the trail. This is a great option if you’re looking for a half day activity outside. Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks if you decide to make a day of it!
- Noquemanon Trail
- The Noquemanon Trail is lovely since it’s parallel to the Dead River. It’s an out and back route where your dog must be on a leash. The parking lot can fill up quickly so it’s best to get out there early.

Shan’s tip: A lot of locals will recommend spending time in Presque Isle Park. I would agree it is a must-see when in town. However you’ll need to leave your pup in the car. If you are feeling adventurous, you can jump the cliffs and check it off your bucket list. Just be sure to stop by the Island Ice Cream Store to treat yourself and your pup for patiently waiting in the car.
Best dog-friendly places to eat in Marquette
Full disclosure that all of the places I’ve listed below all have outdoor patios which are dog friendly.
- Donckers
- Donckers is an Institution in this town! It was established in 1896 and has some of the best chocolate and fudge you’ll find in the Midwest. They serve breakfast and lunch and still have a fully functioning soda fountain. There is an outdoor seating area where you can bring your pup.
- Third Street Bagel
- Whether you’re looking to get your carbs in for the day before a big adventure, or you’re recovering from the night before, eating at Third Street is an absolute must. Third Street has everything from a plain bagel to a stacked sandwich.
- For my gluten free friends, you’re in luck as they offer gluten free bread! They’ve got a great patio and always have a dog water bowl available.
Shan’s tip: Third Street Bagel is right across the street from Blackrocks Brewery. Unfortunately they are not dog-friendly. But they do have the best homemade beer in town. They used to have a mug club open to the public. If you’re a member, you are known as one of the chosen ones!
- Lake Superior Smokehouse
- This spot is 10-15 minutes away from downtown Marquette. Lake Superior has a biergarten that almost always has live music playing in the background. They do recommend reservations which I would also encourage if you’re visiting in the summer months.
